Last week, Mr. Knodel’s class enjoyed an exciting hands-on science demonstration led by Mr. Olsen. Students explored the fascinating world of aquatic waves—and they did it using an unexpected combination of duct tape, skewers, and candy!
To better understand how waves travel through water, students built their own wave machines. Each wave machine was made by attaching gummy candies to the ends of wooden skewers, then securing the skewers—taped together at the top—between two anchors, such as chairs.
When one skewer was tapped, the students observed a wave moving through the “medium” (the tape and skewers), transferring energy from one end to the other. The gummy candies helped them easily see the up-and-down motion created as the wave traveled.
This creative and memorable activity brought science to life and helped students visualize how waves behave in the natural world. Thank you, Mr. Olsen, for an engaging and educational afternoon!
